Week #74 - The Rain Just Won't Stop!
I know I say this every week, but this week was Crazy!!
It has been raining for 24 hours! It is not letting up. Last night we got a call from President Senna that we have to stay in. We can't go out because of all the water. I am drenched just going in out from the car to the building. There is so much water that it has started to flood our church and peoples homes. It is like cyclone rain, but not all the wind.
All week has just been a run around. I received a call last p-day after we spoke that I had to get packed up because we had a flight for Maputo in the middle of the night and we had to pick up the district leaders in our area too. We spent a few days in Maputo at leadership conference. There I met up with Elder Sosa. He is great! He is from Brazil, but he came to Utah for 8 months as an exchange student, so he speaks fluent English too. He said he did not know any English when he moved to Utah and it was scary. I cannot even imagine.
President is opening up a new area in our zone. It is way out far, like 12 - 13 hour drive to get there. It's pretty cool that they can open a new area. That was like when I was in Nampula. It was tough, but a good experience. This next transfer the missions will be divided officially and there will be 22 missionaries coming. I have no idea where they will go. Then the next transfer there will be over 30 more missionaries. A ton are coming from Mexico. Sad story, one of the new vehicles that we got rolled. Not mine. It was one in Maputo - the missionaries were ok. But it was a brand new truck. It is all dented in on the side now.
While I was ironing my shirt the morning of the 16th I mentioned to Elder Sosa that I wanted to do something to celebrate my birthday. He looked at me kinda funny. He asked me how I knew it was his birthday? I didn't, I was talking about my birthday. We both had birthdays this past week one day apart! His was on the 16th and mine was on the 17th - it was so funny! We were still in Maputo, so we bought Monopoly and played it for out birthday and ate at KFC! Oh, how I love that place. That evening we were playing and then the secretaries called and said we had to fly out in the morning at 4am. I just couldn't sleep and stayed up and played Monopoly with Elder Barney and we talked until 2am and then traveled to the airport. Then we dropped everyone off at their homes and by the time we got home, we had been awake for 30 hours. So tired, so we crashed!
No teaching or anything this week, just a conference, driving, and lots of rain. Oh, Ancha that was in Tete came back and was in church on Sunday. So we are working with her and she still wants to be baptized. So we have to stay in until the rains stop. The power goes on and off - so you never no what you will have. I think I am going to buy some protein powder with the money from grandparents. I eat apples and tons of peanut butter every day. Thanks!
Come Amor,
Elder Rees
