Week #35 - We Had to Evacuate Because of Cyclone Kenneth
We have not received communication from CJ since his communication with us on Saturday. So we are still waiting to hear how his evacuation went and how he is doing. Quite an adventure! We are grateful he is safe!! He has been sent to an area somewhere close to Maputo. We look forward to finding out where and who he is with. Thank you for all the prayers for him.
This is Elder Rees' 3rd disaster he has been a part of. Tallahassee, Florida - Hurricane Michael (cleaned up for 6 weeks while waiting for his visa), Beira, Mozambique - Cyclone Ida (He served there when he arrived in Mozambique), Nacala, Mozambique - Cyclone Kenneth (6 weeks apart from last Cyclone, Worst Cyclone to hit Mozambique, Evacuated missionaries due to danger)
Reported Information regarding CJ and the Cyclone:
Thursday, April 25th, 4:30am:
President Senna reported:"According to the news the weather marked the green circled area on the map as the area that would be affected by the Cyclone. This is Nacala. We have already evacuated the 4 missionaries from there."
Friday, April 26th, 8:30am:
"They are safe and have been evacuate from Nacala to the Capital Nampula. (That area is still in the Cyclone affected area and receiving large amounts of rain. The roads have been horrible and they are waiting for flights out) As soon as they get their flights they will be traveling to Maputo to the mission home. They still have two flights until they arrive."Pres & Sis Senna sent this photo on facebook - to ease our hearts!! |

Elder CJ Rees reported:Yes, I'm safe and I'm in Maputo agora (now). It was a crazy week!! I'll talk to you talvez (maybe) on Monday. Love you, Keep us in your prayers and please pray for the members and people of Nacala!
Com Amor, Elder Rees
Elder Thornton (one of the missionaries from Nacala with CJ) wrote his family on Monday and we learned a little more:
"So, this week has been super interesting and wild and unexpected. We got a call Monday night saying that there was a cyclone coming for Nacala and we needed to get out of there ASAP, so we ran around trying to let people know what was happening. We had to postpone the wedding and a bunch of other stuff. Anyways, at 6 the next morning we were on the road to Nampula. There we walked with the other missionaries and stayed with the Zone leaders.
Then we got a call a few days later that we were going to be evacuated to Maputo. So we flew out and got to Maputo. We were assigned to various houses. Now we are still just here in Maputo and we don't know exactly what's going on or when we are going to leave. I'm getting a little stressed out right now because there is so much to do in Nacala"
